Abstract
An in vitro study was carried out at the Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacialorthopaedics, Tamilnadu Government Dental College and Hospital, Chennai,
With an aim to determine the shear bond strengths of the resin modified glass ionomer cement (Fuji Ortho LC) under five different enamel surface conditions before bonding and compare the same with a conventional chemically cured composite resin adhesive (Unite, 3M Unitek). Ninety non-carious premolar teeth that were extracted for orthodontic treatment purposes were used and subjected to different enamel conditions. The shear bond strength of the resin modified glass ionomer cement for its efficacy in orthodontic bonding was also studied.
The results showed that the mean shear bond strengths were significantly different (P < 0.001) among different enamel conditions and that the shear bond strength of moist enamel surface, etched with 10% polyacrylic acid for 20 seconds [13.44 Mpa] approached the bond strength of composite resin [13.65 Mpa].
