Abstract
Autophagy has a prominent role in the biologic pathways involved in chronic lung diseases by affecting immunity, cell proliferation, cell death and disposal of unnecessary proteins. Cell responses against antigens facilitate occurrence of many lung diseases affecting the airways, alveoli and interstitium. Cell death and proliferation are involved in the pathogenesis of lung diseases. A deficiency in autophagy is associated with hyperactivation of inflammation. Induction of autophagy acts as an anti-inflammatory defense. Endothelial dysfunction and pulmonary vascular cell proliferation are associated with pulmonary hypertension. A deficiency or an increase in autophagy activity has a key role in the pathogenesis of different lung diseases. The proper understanding of autophagy involved in lung diseases enables to formulate proper therpy for respiratory diseases.
