Abstract
We report a case of diffusely infiltrating signet ring cell carcinoma (SRCC) of the esophagus, a rare and unusual adenocarcinoma of the esophagus, in a long segment Barrett's epithelium. Grossly tumor was a circumferential ulcerative indurated lesion in the lower esophagus extending 5 cm from gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) above and 1 cm into the cardia of the stomach below without involvement of the lymph nodes. The patient died soon after radical esophago- gastrectomy. Histologically, the tumor was SRCC. Proximal resected edge showed tumor invasion and Barrett's mucosa composed of admixture of gastric foveolar type and intestinal type with goblet cells. Esophageal SRCC with infiltrative growth is highly aggressive and has a poor treatment outcome and may need a special treatment strategy.
