Abstract
The hemolytic-uremic syndrome is a common cause of acute renal failure in infants and children. It is characterized by the triad of hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and acute renal failure. HUS is a disease that affects approximately 2 in 100,000 children worldwide every year. Peak incidence rates have been reported to reach approximately 20 of 100,000 children. Activation of microvascular endothelium plays a central role in the pathogenesis and eventually leads to endothelium-blood cell interaction and platelet thrombosis, with occlusion of small vessels and capillaries of target organs and secondary organ failure. The present study is aimed at categorizing the various cases of HUS observed over a three year period among the surgical biopsies. The histological findings in the cases have been recorded and an attempt made to correlate these with etiology. Six cases of HUS were observed of which 3 cases were due to malignant hypertension, one was drug induced, one due to cyclosporine toxicity. In one case the exact etiology could not be ascertained.
