Abstract
Traditional norms and values of Indian Society have emphasized the obligations towards parents and elders. Due to the trends towards nuclear families, many elders are spending their twilight years all alone. Thus ageing has become a major social challenge. Senior citizens are facing social, mental and economic challenges and are also subjected to abuse. Constitution has made provisions for securing the right to public assistance in case of oldage through maintenance of welfare of parents and senior citizens. Senior citizens have the right to claim maintenance, and medical care. State Governments have obligation and duties towards the senior citizens. There are various remedies available to senior citizens in case of violation of statutory rights. There are various schemes for senior citizens and the medical profession has a duty to provide assistance to them.
